Nicole Mathews joined the Bureau of Community Financial Assistance in July 2013 as the new, full-time Forest Fire Protection (FFP) Grant Manager. In this position, Nicole is responsible for the statewide management and administration of the FFP Grant Program. FFP grants are available to Wisconsin fire departments and county/area fire associations. Grant funding is intended to expand the use of local fire departments to augment and strengthen the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) overall initial attack fire suppression capabilities on forest fires. Division of Forestry colleague, Chris Klahn, is “looking forward to working with Nicole in continuing to assist our important partners, the Fire Departments of Wisconsin.”

On a personal note, Nicole attended UW-Madison where she earned a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) in Finance, Investment and Banking as well as a BA in Spanish Literature and Hispanic Studies. She then worked for The Nature Conservancy in Illinois, Colorado, and with the Great Lakes Program before returning to graduate school at UW-Madison to earn an MS in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development. She completed her master’s work in southern Costa Rica contributing to the analysis of CO2-equivalent emissions throughout the coffee production lifecycle. Nicole is currently a Team Leader for volunteer ecological restoration work parties at the UW-Arboretum. She is certified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL), speaks Spanish, and loves traveling.
