Nominations for 2013 Brownfield Renewal Awards Due June 28th

Brownfields Renewal Magazine is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Brownfield Renewal Awards in the categories of Environmental impacts, Economic impacts, Social impacts, Sustainability impacts, and Brownfields for Energy/Brownfield to “Brightfield.” Nominations are due June 28th at 5:00 PM CST. Any individual or entity is eligible to submit an application. The online nomination form can be found at www.brownfieldrenewal.com/renewal-awards-2013.html#winners.

Past Wisconsin winners include the Neenah Glatfelter Redevelopment Project (2012 Economic Impact Award) and the Icke Landfill/Novation Technology site (2011 Economic Impact Award). More information on these projects can be found at www.brownfieldrenewal.com/renewal-awards.html.

Grant Writing Workshop Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for this year’s EPA Brownfields Grant Writing workshops hosted by the RR Program. These workshops are for local governments and their grant writers, and will focus on eligibility requirements, grant process, and strategies for successful grant proposals for EPA Assessment, Cleanup and Revolving Loan Fund (ARC) Grants. Three free workshops will be held in the following locations:

July 23rd DNR South Central Headquarters (Fitchburg) Register by July 19th
July 24th North Central Technical College (Wausau) Register by July 22nd
August 14th Waukesha State Office Building (Waukesha) Register by August 12th

Darsi Foss Wins National Award 

On May 16th, Darsi Foss, the RR Program’s Brownfields and Outreach Section Chief, was presented with the Brownfields Leadership Award-State Programs by the National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals (NALGEP) at Brownfields 2013 in Atlanta. Darsi has been with the Wisconsin DNR since 1989, and has been Chief of the Brownfields and Outreach Section since 1998. The award recognizes outstanding leadership, achievement and innovation in Brownfields redevelopment. Foss was one of only two people nationwide recognized in the State Program category.

Eagle Flats applies Wisconsin’s Sustainable Remediation Vision

The Remediation and Redevelopment program is working to foster environmentally friendly practices for sustainability and “greener” cleanups.  A recent redevelopment at the former Kerwin Paper Company in Appleton – Eagle Flats – incorporated a number of sustainable concepts.

Kiel Manufacturer Awarded WAM Contractor Services

A.A. Laun Furniture Co. in Kiel was awarded Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessment services through the WAM Contractor Services Program. This site, located on the Sheboygan River, has been a furniture manufacturer since the late 1800s. The company shut down operations in May 2013, and has been participating in the WPRI Program to address any environmental concerns to ready the site for sale and redevelopment. Off-site Liability Exemption Form Updated

The new form is now fillable so you can enter and save the completed form to your computer.  However, please keep in mind that you still need to print and mail it. This form should be used when requesting an off-site liability letter and when you are requesting a liability clarification letter related to the off-site liability exemption. More information about the off-site liability exemption and addressing situations when contamination migrates across a property line is available at  dnr.wi.gov‌/topic/Brownfields/offsite.html.

Hazardous Waste Decoded

The DNR Hazardous Waste Program recently launched a new GovDelivery subscription called Hazardous Waste Decoded. The monthly newsletter is intended primarily for businesses and institutions that generate or manage hazardous waste. Each issue focuses on one topic, such as a ‘plain language’ discussion of a hazardous waste requirement that may be confusing or complicated, or updates on proposed legislation.
