Look Up: Wisconsin State Parks Offer Stellar Views Of The Night Sky
There are few places in the U.S. where you can see not just the stars but the bright glow of other planets and the dazzling colors of the Milky Way. Dark Sky Parks present an opportunity for us to see beyond our world and enjoy the darker evening hours.
Our very own Newport State Park in Door County is one of those places, with a coveted title of International Dark Sky Place from the International Dark-Sky Association. This lake-side and secluded state park is fantastic for avoiding light pollution while being right in our own backyard.
The designation puts Newport on an exclusive list of places like Arches National Park and Death Valley National Park. The darkness makes it the perfect destination for astrophotography, especially in the winter.
Wildcat Mountain State Park in Vernon County is another popular destination for dark sky viewing in Wisconsin. Both the Upper Picnic Area Observation Point and the Starlight Trail offer great access to starlight views.
Devil's Lake State Park also features some of the best star-filled skies in Wisconsin along with Big Bay State Park, Harrington Beach State Park, Kettle Moraine State Forest - Lapham Peak Unit, Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area and Blue Mound State Park.

Maple Volunteers Needed
Join our team of Maple volunteers to celebrate the sweetest time of year during MacKenzie’s Maple Education Program!
The MacKenzie Center’s annual education program runs all of March and your help is needed in many areas.
Volunteers will be trained to conduct student tours, collect sap, process maple syrup, and/or assist with other behind-the-scenes sugarbush duties.
Volunteers can sign up for just a few days or for the entire month. No previous experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity for high school students and adults to get outside and learn new hands-on skills.
Our training session will be held at the MacKenzie Center Lodge on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering, please email AbigailR.Janey@wisconsin.gov or call 608-635-8112 anytime before Jan. 19.
The MacKenzie Center is located 2 miles east of Poynette on County Road CS.
Property Highlight: Tuscobia State Trail
This 74-mile trail on a former rail corridor is one of the longest rail trails in the state, running from Park Falls to the Wild Rivers State Trail just north of Rice Lake. The trail passes through part of the Flambeau River State Forest and the rugged wilderness of Wisconsin's Blue Hills. The trail connects seven small communities in Barron, Washburn, Sawyer and Price counties, each providing year-round accommodations and services.
The trail offers opportunities for ATVs, snowmobiling, horseback riding, off-road bicycling and walking. Trail activities vary by time of year and by county. The western end of the trail is part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
Snowmobiles are allowed on the trail. Operators must follow all Wisconsin snowmobile laws. The trail also connects to numerous miles of county snowmobile trails.
The trail is open to walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing; however, the trail is not groomed and users must share the trail with snowmobiles. Skiers do not need a trail pass while using the trail.
