What’s Happening In Wisconsin's State Parks, Forests, Trails And Recreation Areas
Camping season will soon ramp up; make your campsite reservation today. / Photo Credit: Wisconsin DNR
We are quickly approaching the start of Wisconsin's busiest outdoor recreation time! Here are a few tips and reminders for your outdoor recreating:
Save Time – Buy Online No one wants to start their state park visit by waiting in line. Get your vehicle admission sticker in advance. Stickers are mailed out within 30 days of purchase, so if you don't get it before your trip, don't worry. Print out your email confirmation or follow the steps in your email confirmation to let the DNR staff know your sticker is en route. Stickers are good for the entire calendar year and valid at all Wisconsin state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas.
Camping Wisconsin's state properties use automatic check-in for outdoor campsites. If you have a reservation, proceed directly to your reserved campsite after the designated check-in time of 3 p.m. Campers will be automatically checked in through their reservation. Printing out your reservation helps staff verify check-in.
Campground hosts are present in many but not all campgrounds. Information regarding how to get in touch with property staff or conservation wardens will be available at kiosks located in campgrounds.
Before you go, refresh yourself with Wisconsin DNR camping rules.
Know Before You Go Summer is also prime time for road construction. Check local roads to make sure your assumed route is open. Additionally, popular parks may experience congestion and long wait times at the entrance.
What else is on your to-do list before heading out for that first outdoor adventure of the season? Do you have a golden rule you follow prior to recreating at state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas on a busy holiday weekend? Share on social media and tag us using #OutWiGo.

Memorial Day Is Around The Corner Before you know it, the three-day weekend that is the unofficial kick-off to summer will be here. To help plan your long weekend adventure, we encourage you to check out our hidden gems map and our summer exploration maps (scroll halfway down the page) to discover the lesser-traveled places across Wisconsin's state properties.
To help make visits stress-free for everyone, consider buying your vehicle admission sticker and state trail passes before you get to the state park, forest, trail or recreation area of choice.
Take a minute to review park, forest and recreation area maps so you can learn about different trails that are available. Checking out the maps can help you find trails that are truly "off the beaten path": see the parts of wild Wisconsin that aren't the most visited trails in your favorite park.

Be Tick Aware Fight the bite and protect yourself and your family from Lyme disease and other diseases caused by tick bites when you’re outdoors.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by deer ticks, which can be as small as a poppy seed. Deer ticks are common in Wisconsin and live in wooded areas and brushy or grassy areas adjacent to woods. Because of their small size, deer tick bites can often go unnoticed.
You can limit your chance of contracting Lyme disease and other illnesses spread by ticks by following these tips to avoid tick bites:
- Cover as much of your body as possible; ideally, wear long sleeves and pants and tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks.
- Walk in the center of trails where grass and vegetation are mowed.
- Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot and remove quickly.
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent when outdoors. You can also treat your clothes in advance with permethrin.
- Throw your clothes in the dryer for 10 minutes on high heat when you arrive home after recreating.
- Always check yourself, children and pets for ticks, especially behind the knees, under armpits, around the hairline and ears and at the waist.
If you do find a tick embedded in your body, remain calm and remove it as soon as you find it.
More information about ticks and Lyme disease is available on this website.

Take your time soaking in the Madison skyline on the Capital City Trail. / Photo Credit: Wisconsin DNR
There are so many things to enjoy in Madison in the summer: the State Capitol, the Dane County Farmers’ Market and the Memorial Union Terrace, to name a few. If you're in the mood for a spin, you should also add the Capital City State Trail to your Madison checklist.
This trail is the link around and through Madison between the Military Ridge State Trail, Badger State Trail and, eventually, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. Nine miles of the 17-mile trail go through the scenic Capital Springs State Recreation Area south of Madison (camping is available here). You’ll also bike along the Lake Monona shoreline and the picturesque, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace Convention Center.
The Capital City Trail is cooperatively managed by Dane County Parks.
State trail passes are required on this asphalt trail for all users aged 16+ who are biking or in-line skating. See a different side of Madison from the Capital City Trail!
The Capital City State Trail is located in Dane County.

Are you a snowmobiler and just dipped your toes into the summer side of the trails?
WATVA is proud to partner with the Forest County ATV Association to host their very first Let's Ride In Wisconsin event. The Forest County ATV Association along with some members of the WATVA Trail Ambassador program and DNR Safety Instructors will lead a guided tour through some of the finest ATV trails and routes. It will be a slower paced, family friendly day covering 40 miles of forest road, paved route and wooded trails.
