Spring burning plans announced for glacial habitat restoration area and wildlife properties

Prescribed burns used to improve wildlife habitat

HORICON – Department of Natural Resources biologists will be conducting prescribed burns on Glacial Habitat Restoration Area (GHRA) and Dodge County wildlife management properties in east central Wisconsin this spring. Burning is weather dependent and will commence when local conditions are suitable.

GHRA and Dodge County managed properties slated for burning this spring, weather permitting, are located in:

Columbia County – Courtland and Fountain Prairie Townships

Dodge County – Beaver Dam, Calamus, Fox Lake, Burnett, Williamstown, Lowell, Shields and Westford Townships

Fond du Lac County – Alto, Lamartine, Metomen, Oakfield, Springvale and Waupun Townships.

Controlled or prescribed burning is an ecological and economical method of limiting exotic and unwanted brush invasions that crowd out native vegetation. Burning stimulates growth of native grasses and improves habitat for upland game, songbirds and waterfowl. It helps preserve grasslands and native plant species that were sustained by natural fires prior to European settlement.

The DNR Wildlife Management program works to enhance and preserve wildlife habitat within a 28-township area encompassing parts of Columbia, Dodge, Fond du Lac Counties and the Horicon Marsh through conservation easements, fee title and general wildlife management.

Please contact Wildlife Technicians Chris Cole at (920)387-7889 or Deb Weidert at (920)387-7875 if you would like to have more information regarding prescribed fire as a tool for wildlife habitat improvement.
