NR 812 changes are coming soon

To all licensed drillers and pump installers,

Thank you to all water well professionals who continue to work and provide safe drinking water for Wisconsin’s citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that all requirements for licensing, well and pump work are in effect – so be sure you have the required license, and follow all NR 812 regulations for well construction and pump installation. DNR private water supply staff are here to help if you have any questions.

Changes to NR 812 - Wisconsin's well and pump code - are coming soon!

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been in the process of revising chapter NR 812, Wisconsin Administrative Code (NR 812) for the past three years. We appreciate the valuable input and comments that drillers and pump installers provided along the way. The process is almost complete, and final rule changes will go into effect soon.

Why is the rule being changed?

The objectives for changing NR 812 are to correct and clarify language, simplify and streamline procedures, update construction standards, and make sure the rule is consistent with federal and state laws, while keeping protections for groundwater and public health.

What are the changes?

A 3-page NR 812 Changes Information Sheet is now available. This information sheet provides a summary of the changes to each section of the rule.

When will the changes go into effect?

Changes to NR 812 will go into effect after the rule is published by the Legislative Reference Bureau. The effective date is currently expected to be July 1, 2020, but it may be delayed until August 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where can I get more information?

DNR will send weekly email communications to drillers and pump installers about the rule changes, with more details on specific topics, and links to training modules, publications and fact sheets. This information will also be posted on DNR’s NR 812 rule changes web page. DNR will send an electronic link of the revised NR 812 and a printed copy of the revised rule to each licensed driller and pump installer as soon as it’s available, which will be close to the effective date of the rule.
