A Wisconsin Flood Survivor Story

In 2018, many areas of Wisconsin were hit with record amounts of rainfall. Robert and Redgy Nelson from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, experienced significant flood damage to their house as a result of torrential rainfall. With the help of flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), they were able to quickly assess the damage and restore their home.

How can I buy flood insurance?

There are many great reasons to have flood insurance. Just one inch of water can cost $25,000 in damage. Flood insurance will help you pay for flood damage—something homeowners and renters insurance policies typically won’t do. Many people don’t realize this until it’s too late. You can purchase flood insurance through an insurance agent or an insurer participating in the NFIP. You cannot buy it directly from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). If your insurance agent does not sell flood insurance, you can contact the NFIP Referral Call Center at 1-800-427-4661 to request an agent referral.

Training Opportunities

Shoreland Zoning Winter Workshops

Kay Lutze and Dale Rezabek, DNR shoreland protection program, are planning to hold “winter workshops” to be held at county WCCA District Meetings.  Workshops most likely will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.   There is also the possibility that we would request a joint district meeting depending on dates and locations.

The agenda for the workshops may include: shoreland-wetland district regulation implementation, land disturbance regulations, ordinary high-water mark/navigability determinations (classroom training), and if time allows, a topic your district would like to work on.  

Winter workshops will most likely start in January and run through March.  Stay tuned for dates, times and locations.
