Lack of snow cover requires burning permits

MADISON – Citizens are reminded that burning permits are required anytime the ground is not snow-covered between January 1 and May 31 in portions of Grant, Iowa, Richland and Crawford counties that lie in the DNR’s extensive fire protection area. This requirement applies to burning of brush piles and to burn barrels. Only fires used exclusively for the purposes of cooking food or warming the body do not require a burning permit.

Areas included are:

  • Crawford and Richland counties: all unincorporated areas
  • Grant and Iowa counties: townships that border the Wisconsin River plus the Grant County townships of Hickory Grove and Castle Rock
  • Iowa County: Highland Township and portions of Dodgeville, Ridgeway and Brigham

Permits are free and good for the calendar year. Burning permits may be obtained online by visiting: http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire/permit.htm or by calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) to have a permit mailed or emailed. Emergency Fire Wardens can also issue permits. For the location of Emergency Fire Wardens, or permit information, call the DNR Fire Control Office in Boscobel at (608) 375-4232

On the day you wish to burn, you are required to check for any burning restrictions that may be in place in your location for that day. This can be done on the internet dnr.wi.gov/wisburn, or by phone 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876). Burning restrictions are updated daily by 11:00 a.m.

Special Permits

Special Permits are required for all proposed burning done prior to 6 p.m. daily and all burns over ten acres in size. Special Permits are issued on a limited basis and after review by DNR fire control personnel. People requesting special permits in Crawford County, the affected townships of Grant County, and the affected townships of Iowa County served by Highland Fire Department should contact Cindy Kohles or Ellen Gundrum, (608)375-4232. In affected areas of Richland County contact Todd Kenefick, (608) 647-7981, and for the remainder of affected areas in Iowa County contact Scott Lancaster or Steve Williamson (608) 588-7725.
