Snapshot Wisconsin is fortunate to have a social scientist working on our team. Christine Anhalt-Depies is a PhD student from UW-Madison who has been surveying our trail camera hosts prior to participating and again after participating for one year.
Between May 2016 and May 2017, she administered a survey to 184
Snapshot Wisconsin volunteers prior to their training. The survey asks
volunteers about themselves, their previous experience with wildlife related
activities and programs, and their motivations for participating. Most
volunteers (78%) are men and on average are 58 years of age. Most volunteers have
some previous experience with the outdoors or natural resources; 70% of
volunteers identify as a hunter and a third of volunteers have previous experience with
other state or federal programs.
However, half had not previously participated in citizen science before
joining Snapshot Wisconsin.
The majority (86%) of participants own the property where they
host a Snapshot Wisconsin camera and are motivated by a curiosity to learn
about wildlife nearby. Many volunteers are also motivated by the
opportunity to contribute to wildlife monitoring and scientific research.
To date, 96% of volunteers who complete training continue to
participate in the program. Beginning in
November 2017, a follow-up survey is sent out to participants who have been active for more than one year to gauge their satisfaction with the project. Look for those results in a future science update.
Last month we opened general enrollment to Snapshot Wisconsin applicants with access to private land in Ashland, Bayfield, Crawford, Douglas, Price, Richland, Sauk or Vilas Counties. We had 215 new applications in January which is our highest month yet! We will begin processing these applications this week so if you applied to participate from one of our new counties look for an email from us soon.
We are still recruiting volunteers from these counties (and all our open counties). To signup please visit www.snapshotwisignup.org.

January was a busy month for Snapshot Wisconsin on Zooniverse! Season 6 was completed in just 54 days and Season 7 was launched just one week later on January 26th. We always have more photos coming in so getting them processed quickly is imperative to keep up with the flow.
Thanks to all of our online volunteers who help us classify our images! The new rules instituted in Season 6 have helped our Zooniverse seasons move more quickly and volunteers have reported that the experience is more interesting. As a reminder, we began using trail camera host classifications for squirrels, raccoons, winter deer and turkeys and summertime cottontails and snowshoe hare. This decision was based on some accuracy assessments on the classifications from our trail camera hosts, which found that their species classification are very accurate when compared to the Zooniverse consensus for the most common species. Thanks very much to our trail camera hosts who take the time to classify all their photos!

We will share one awesome animal photo each month. To enter one of your favorites from a Snapshot Wisconsin camera please send the image as a jpeg attachment with the animal classification, county location and date taken along with the reason why you love the image to DNRSnapshotWisconsin@wisconsin.gov.
This month's image of a white doe with two normal colored fawns was submitted by a trail camera host in Marathon County. This photo was taken December 7, 2017.
Other interesting photos from our cameras can be viewed on our webpage.
