Science Update - Seasonal Variation in Activity

Deer Activity by Type

The image above shows deer activity for antlered, antlerless and fawns in Iowa and Sawyer Counties from June 1 - September 7.  In both counties, antlered deer observations increased into late summer and early fall consistent with the rut. In future seasons when more data are available, we expect to see even stronger rutting and breeding behavior. Fawn activity peaked in early summer around July 1 in Iowa County but only started increasing in Sawyer County in August. In the future, we will be sure to test whether using earlier vs. later photos influences our fawn-to-doe estimates (which so far include only August 2016 data).

Team Member Profile - Dr. Ben Zuckerberg

Dr. Zuckerberg

Dr. Benjamin Zuckerberg is an assistant professor and avian ecologist in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Zuckerberg began studying birds during his undergraduate years, and went on to receive his M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst and Ph.D. in Ecology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. It was during his dissertation research that Dr. Zuckerberg became fascinated with how birds are responding to modern climate change and widespread habitat loss. He spent three years as a research scientist in the citizen science program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a strong advocate for the role of the general public in collecting data on animal populations, and believes that these citizen science programs are essential understanding of how species and natural communities are responding to changes in the environment. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Ben and his family arrived to Wisconsin six years ago and enjoys taking walks with his daughters and the stimulating atmosphere of working at one of the top research universities in the world.

New Announcements - 3 New Counties Open!

Snapshot Wisconsin is now open in 3 additional counties!  Marinette, Oneida and St. Croix counties opened today for general enrollment.  We are looking for trail camera hosts who have access to at least 10 acres of private land in these three counties.  Please visit our application page to signup to participate as a trail camera host.  If you have previously applied from one of these counties we will be in touch soon with more details about training opportunities.  We hope to offer training in April or May in these new counties depending upon volunteer enrollment.  We are also still accepting applications from trail camera hosts in our previously opened counties which include: Dodge, Iowa, Iron, Jackson, Manitowoc, Racine, Sawyer, Vernon and Waupaca.

Trail Camera Host Training Opportunities

The Snapshot Wisconsin Team will be traveling to Viroqua this week to offer our first in person training sessions in Vernon County.  If you are a trail camera host located in the western half of the state and haven't completed training yet please check your email for an invitation to this training session.

Since our volunteers are located around the state it can be a challenge for our small Snapshot Wisconsin team to get to each county, particularly those counties that have been open for several months and may only have a few untrained volunteers waiting for a training session.  If you are willing to travel to a training session in a nearby county please let us know.

We hope to offer a training session at our office in Madison later this month or early in April for volunteers who live locally.  Please watch for an email about that or get in touch with us via email if you would like to attend a Madison training session.
