Science Research Update

This is the first in a planned series of monthly Snapshot Wisconsin updates.  Look for future email updates monthly on the first Monday of every month!

It is important to our project that we share the results of all of the great work that our volunteers do for Snapshot Wisconsin.  We want to make sure that all of you are aware that we analyze the data that is being collected and that analysis will become more sophisticated as more data comes in. Stay tuned in future monthly updates to learn about calculating fawn to doe ratios, as well as detecting daily and seasonal changes in wildlife activity patterns.

The first analysis we can share are counts of wildlife detected by the trail cameras in our first two counties, Iowa and Sawyer. From June 1 – September 7, 2016, volunteers classified >22,000 photos from 19 cameras in Iowa County and 21 cameras in Sawyer County. In both counties, deer were the most prevalent animal seen with >60% of all animal photos being deer photos.  A higher percentage of the deer photos were classified as fawns in Iowa County (26%) compared to Sawyer County (17%).  Additionally, raccoons were over 2 times more common in Iowa County compared to Sawyer County and opossums were only seen in Iowa County (38 observations). In Sawyer County, turkeys were 1.8 times more common and rabbits/hares were over 3 times more common than in Iowa County. Bears, bobcats and foxes were more prevalent in Sawyer County (104, 30, and 21 observations, respectively) compared to Iowa County (0, 1 and 1 observations, respectively).

The chart below indicates the abundance of wildlife detected by the cameras from June 1 - September 7 in Iowa and Sawyer counties

Recent Announcements

New counties added to the open enrollment area!  With the addition of Dodge, Racine and Vernon counties we are now open for enrollment by private volunteers in 9 counties!  Other open counties include Iowa, Iron, Jackson, Manitowoc, Sawyer and Waupaca.  Volunteers in these counties who have access to private land of at least 10 acres are encouraged to apply!  We plan to hold training sessions in the new counties in January.  We recently held training sessions in our other open counties and will schedule additional trainings when needed.

Zooniverse Updates

Zooniverse Season 3 is still ongoing!  Season 3 of Snapshot Wisconsin on Zooniverse is going strong but we still need your help.  Please visit our project and help classify photos from the first season of volunteer hosted cameras.  Due to the diligence of our awesome volunteers in maintaining their camera sites and marking their own blanks this season has far fewer blanks than previous seasons!

Make sure to follow our Snapshot Wisconsin blog where we will post interesting news about the project including updates on research performed at UW-Madison.  Recent posts include careers in Natural Resources, seasonal results, volunteer analysis and the connections between science and art.

JenWNatTL

Our project leader, Jen Stenglein recently gave a talk on UW Campus as part of the lecture series Wednesday Night at the Lab which is presented 50 times per year in part by 2 of our partners, UW-Madison and UW-Extension.  The talk was well attended and people seemed to enjoy the information and especially the photos shown from the project.  There were a lot of interesting questions following the talk.  To watch the talk which was recorded live please visit this link.

Recent Events - 4-H Fall Forum

We had the pleasure of being able to attend the Friday festivities of this year's 4-H Fall Forum which was held at the Green Lake Conference Center last month.  It was a wonderful opportunity to meet lots of students as well as 4-H leaders and chaperones.  We made some great connections and had several people signup to host a trail camera during and following the event.

This was also a great opportunity to get our table display spiffed up which was helped tremendously by the efforts of Dougal Walker and Michelle Voss here at WDNR.  They created our fox banner on the left side of the photo.  The fox and background of the banner is actually a mosaic comprised of lots of Snapshot Wisconsin trail camera images.  If you see us at an event be sure to check it out, it is pretty cool!

Spotlight Photo of the Month

We will share one awesome animal photo each month.  To enter one of your favorites from a Snapshot Wisconsin camera please email the image as a jpeg attachment with the animal classification, county location and date taken along with the reason why you love the image to DNRSnapshotWisconsin@wisconsin.gov.

This month's image of a coyote in the winter sunshine was taken near Clam Lake last year.

Other interesting photos from our cameras can be viewed on our Pinterest board!
