Data Element TR200.3 ICD 10 External Cause Code and Electric Micro Mobility Devices
Data element definition: External cause code used to describe the mechanism (or external factor) that caused the injury event.
Note: The Wisconsin Trauma Data Dictionary is prepared, maintained, and updated by DHS and is published on DHS’s Trauma webpage.
Education and Clarification: Electric micro mobility devices such as e-bicycles (e-bikes) and e-scooters have specific ICD-10 codes that were created in 2023. These codes should be used instead of ICD-10 codes for non-electric micro mobility devices. They are located in the V00-V09 pedestrian injured in transport accident and V20-V29 motorcycle rider injured in transport accident categories. Some examples of these codes are:
-
V00.841A fall from standing electric scooter, initial encounter
-
V27.01XA electric (assisted) bicycle driver injured in collision with fixed or stationary object in nontraffic accident, initial encounter
-
V28.31XA person boarding or alighting an electric (assisted) bicycle injured in non-collision transport accident, initial encounter
