Redistribution of Closed Nursing Home Beds Process Announced

As part of the Division’s commitment to Teach, Learn and Collaborate, the WI Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Quality Assurance (DQA) is announcing a new process for the redistribution of closed nursing home beds.

As the aging population grows in Wisconsin, nursing home demand will increase. Having a process for nursing homes to get additional beds will ensure that Wisconsin is prepared to meet the needs of our aging population. Ensuring access to nursing home beds is a critical component of the provision of long-term care services in Wisconsin.

When a nursing home closes, DHS will review the statutory criteria to determine if those nursing home beds should be redistributed to other nursing homes in the county. If the beds are eligible to be redistributed, nursing homes in the county of the closure can apply for some or all of the closed nursing home beds. DHS will post requests for applications twice per year, typically in January and July.
