MMR Vaccine and VFC Open Forum April 2, 2025

This message is being sent to Vaccines for Children (VFC) providers, local health officers, Tribal health directors, and Immunization Program staff.

MMR Vaccine

As you are probably aware, measles has made a resurgence in the United States. As of today, we have not had a suspect or confirmed case in Wisconsin. Immunization rates for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) are low throughout the state and we are asking all Vaccines for Children Program (VFC) providers to take this opportunity to help protect children that are not vaccinated now before we start to see cases.

  • Look at your VFC inventory of MMR and/or Priorix and order 10% more than what you normally would have on hand.
  • Use WIR or your electronic health record system to do reminder/recall to get unprotected children in for their first or second dose.
  • When you have a visit with one member of the family, review the history of all children in the family and vaccinate as needed to ensure everyone is up to date.
  • Remind parents that they too should check their own record and ensure they are protected. Information can be found on the DHS website.

RSV immunization

Because the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation for the administration of nirsevimab (the monoclonal antibody for infants and children less than 19 months of age) is seasonal, with the use of this product recommended between October 1 and March 31), nirsevimab is no longer available to order through the VFC program for this season.

Similarly, because maternal vaccination against RSV is recommended between September 1 and January 31, the Abrysvo vaccine is also not currently available through the VFC program.

Please remember to keep any product that you have left in the refrigerator from the current season so you have start up stock for next season. Providers will be notified when ordering for both of these products begins (late summer/early fall) to ensure all organizations have product on hand in time to start vaccinating at the recommended time.
