As shared earlier this week, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), along with the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), local health departments, and federal partners, is working to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to cucumbers. Wisconsin has at least three laboratory-confirmed cases linked to this outbreak. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) issued a food safety alert and DHS issued a news release today about this outbreak and investigation. 

The FDA announced the cucumbers have been recalled. 

Recall information: 

• According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the cucumbers were sold by SunFed Produce, LLC (SunFed) and were shipped to 26 states, including Wisconsin, between October 12 and November 26.  

• The cucumbers have now been recalled. Individual cucumbers may have a sticker showing "SunFed Mexico.” More information about the recall and identifying the recalled cucumbers is available on the FDA website. 

Advice to long term care and health care facilities  

DHS urges facilities to take the following steps:   

• Do not use or serve recalled cucumbers.
• Do not serve food items containing cucumbers if you don’t know whether recalled cucumbers were used.
• Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the contaminated cucumbers using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
• Monitor for symptoms of severe Salmonella infection:  
  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F 
  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving 
  • Bloody diarrhea 
  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down 
  • Signs of dehydration, such as: 
    • Not peeing much
    • Dry mouth and throat
    • Feeling dizzy when standing up
