Background

The Wisconsin Maternal Mortality Review Team (MMRT) is a multi-disciplinary group of professionals that reviews case-level (de-identified) information about deaths of Wisconsin residents that occur during pregnancy or within one year of the end of pregnancy. The purpose of the MMRT is to make recommendations on changes in systems and practices that are intended to result in prevention of future deaths.

The team is committed to broad membership inclusion, embracing the idea that diverse member representation—professionally, geographically, economically, racially, ethnically and by gender—allows the team to focus on 1) both improving the quality of care for pregnant and postpartum people in the health care setting and, 2) on improving social determinants of health.

In 2024, the team is specifically looking for new members with experience from the following areas to fill three to four spots:

  • Substance use and addiction medicine
  • Emergency medicine
  • Rural health
  • Intimate partner violence and violence prevention
  • Child protective services and the Department of Child & Family Services
  • Racism and discrimination experts
  • Tribal organizations
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Community or family representatives

Commitment

Team members are expected to commit to a year-long membership with the opportunity to recommit annually. All MMRT members serve in a volunteer capacity and do not receive compensation. Meetings will have a virtual option, though there is likely to be one in-person or hybrid meeting at some point during the year.

  • Meetings currently scheduled for 2024 include Friday, March 8; Friday, May 10; Friday, July 12; Friday, September 20; and Friday, November 15. All MMRT members are expected to attend at least 75% of meetings throughout the year.
  • Each meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Meeting preparation includes reviewing 10 to 12 cases in advance. With 30 to 60 minutes per case, this amounts to roughly 10 hours of prep work before each meeting.
