Direct Ship Vaccine Orders to be Limited Going Forward
Increase in excess vaccine and need to eliminate waste driving change
During today’s biweekly Wisconsin COVID-19 Vaccine Program Webinar, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) discussed that it will be limiting direct ship vaccine orders going forward. DHS is making this change due to an increase in excess vaccine reported in the state. The change is designed to decrease excess supply, vaccine wastage and inaccurate reporting in WIR.
To support correcting Wisconsin’s vaccine inventory data, all orders submitted through the survey will be reviewed by staff to verify accurate inventory.
Vaccine Ordering Amounts
 Critical to have accurate inventory
DHS needs your help in making sure inventories are accurate so waste can be mitigated. It is very important that quantities and expiration dates in WIR are correct. It is from WIR that vaccine quantities are pulled to verify vaccine supply. The provider agreement states that inventory is to be verified at the end of each business day. Please physically count the inventory you have on hand by lot number and make any adjustments necessary in WIR.
Calculate and enter correct expiration dates in WIR
To calculate the expiration date on gray and orange cap vials, count 9 months, with the month of manufacture as the first month. Those dates must also be entered into WIR. Finally, verify that all purple cap vaccine is holding the correct expiration date in WIR. Any expiration date showing up as 12/31/2069 on any COVID-19 vaccine must be updated in WIR.
Note that on March 7, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of a shelf-life extension for the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for an additional three months. The shelf life of this vaccine has been updated from 6 months to 9 months. The FDA shelf-life extension applies to all inventory dated to expire on March 7, 2022, or later. Vaccine dated prior to March 7, 2022, should be disposed of, and reported as waste. Make sure to file a wastage form.
Please confirm all lots on hand of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) through the following websites:
