US Food and Drug Administration Writes Letter to the Federation of State Medical Boards Advising Against the Use of Ivermectin as a Treatment Option for COVID-19

Ivermectin is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved prescription medication used to treat certain infections caused by internal and external parasites. When used as prescribed for approved indications, it is generally safe and well tolerated. Recently, the FDA has received complaints about pharmacies selling ivermectin drug products claiming they can treat or prevent COVID-19. Although there are ongoing clinical trials assessing ivermectin as a prevention or treatment of COVID-19, the current data does not show that ivermectin is safe or effective for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Additionally, FDA has cautioned about the potential risks of ivermectin use for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Side effects associated with ivermectin may include severe skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, facial or limb swelling, neurologic adverse events, sudden drop in blood pressure, and liver injury (hepatitis). Ivermectin is not authorized or approved by FDA for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Drug products that claim to treat or prevent COVID-19 are not proven safe and effective and may cause serious harm to consumers.
