Children 5-11 Years Old Now Eligible for COVID-19 Vaccine
Children 5-11 years old are now eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) COVID-19 vaccine. This is an exciting and important step in protecting our children from the virus and keeping our communities healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses for full protection, and is the first and only vaccine currently available for this age group.
When can this age group get the vaccine?
Children 5-11 years old can get the COVID-19 vaccine now! Just visit vaccines.gov or call 211.
Please note, some vaccinators are awaiting their vaccine shipment, so it will likely take time for the pediatric vaccine to be widely available.
Why should children get vaccinated against COVID-19?
The best protection against COVID-19 is getting vaccinated. The COVID-19 vaccine can help keep children from getting sick, being hospitalized, or dying from the virus. The vaccine can also prevent kids from getting and spreading COVID-19 to others, including people who may be more at risk for severe disease, like grandparents or family members with health conditions. Finally, when a child is vaccinated against COVID-19, families don’t need to worry about them missing out on school or activities because of quarantine after close contact.
How can I find out more about the vaccine?
Information about COVID-19 and vaccines for children is available on the DHS website, on the COVID-19: Resources for Parents and Guardians webpage. There are also resources on vaccine safety available in multiple languages on the COVID-19: Vaccine Resources page.
