Wisconsin Supports FDA Authorization, CDC Recommendation for COVID-19 Pfizer Vaccine for Youth Ages 5-11
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) announces that children 5-11 years old are now eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for youth ages 5-11 requires two doses for full protection, and is the first and currently the only vaccine available for this age group.
After successful clinical trials and a rigorous review of all available data, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to include youth ages 5-11 on October 29, 2021.
On November 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) members voted unanimously (14 to 0) to recommend the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11. Shortly after, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky fully accepted the ACIP’s recommendation.
When will vaccinations begin?
DHS strongly encourages vaccinators not start vaccinating children 5-11 years old until:
Vaccinators will receive this new vaccine product and related ancillary kits specifically designed for the 5-11 year-old population. Pfizer vaccine approved for those older than 12 years cannot be used in this age group.
Parents and guardians can find information about COVID-19 and vaccines for children on the COVID-19: Resources for Parents and Guardians page. There are also resources on vaccine safety available in multiple languages on the COVID-19: Vaccine Resources page.
DHS will continue to provide up-to-date information as it becomes available.
Note that a separate communication has been sent to Local and Tribal Health Departments (LTHDs).
