EMS Providers Able to Provide COVID-19 Vaccination Under Revised Standing Order
A new standing order will enable Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers and practitioners to administer COVID-19 vaccine, providing an opportunity for more partnerships at the local level that increase the capacity of vaccinators to meet community demands.
Incorporating EMS providers and practitioners as COVID-19 vaccinators provides additional avenues for COVID-19 vaccination and much needed vaccinator support in an anticipated environment of increased demand, due to the potential approval of COVID-19 booster doses.
While there is no mandate for EMS service providers or practitioners to participate in this program, the new order makes it easier for EMS providers and practitioners to lend their skills in mitigating the impact of COVID-19.
EMS providers planning to provide COVID-19 vaccination support will be provided with and required to fulfil COVID-19 vaccination training, and they will be encouraged to contact their local and tribal health department (LTHD) to notify them of their availability.
Vaccinators who are interested in engaging with local EMS are encouraged to reach out to their local EMS contacts directly to explore potential support and to collaborate with LTHDs to ensure all vaccinating partners are aware of local capacity.
The Department of Health Services (DHS) is not compensating EMS providers or practitioners for this service; vaccinators will need to negotiate any compensation.
These types of collaboration make it possible to protect more people from the harms of COVID-19 and strive toward an end to the COVID-19 pandemic in Wisconsin.
