Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine Availability
States are currently not able to order Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine from the federal government. This means, for the foreseeable future, the only Johnson & Johnson vaccines available in Wisconsin are doses that vaccinators have on-hand and are able to redistribute on the COVID-19 Vaccine Exchange - a platform where providers can list which vaccines they would like to redistribute or receive. It is critical that vaccinators are strategically planning their usage of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, considering expiration dates, and sharing what they cannot use on the Wisconsin COVID-19 Vaccine Exchange with ample time before the expiration date.
DHS is not yet aware of a timeline for when states will be able to order Johnson & Johnson and encourage vaccinators to plan accordingly. DHS will continue to share information regarding Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine as it becomes available.
Reminder: Johnson & Johnson Shelf Life Extended
On June 10, 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized an extension of the shelf life for the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine from three months to 4.5 months when refrigerated at 36-46 degrees Fahrenheit (2-8 degrees Celsius). This decision is based on data from ongoing stability studies.
Prior to discarding any doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, DHS recommends vaccinators check the expiration dates using one of the following methods outlined in the attached resource, and below:
- Visit https://vaxcheck.jnj/ and input the lot number
- Scan the Quick Response (QR) code on the carton using a mobile device camera
- Call (US Toll-Free) 1-800-565-4008 or (US Toll) 1-908-455-9922
You can also follow a step-by-step guide or view a video detailing the process of checking the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine expiry information at http://janssencovid19vaccine.com/hcp/check-expiration.html
Changing Expiration Date for Doses on the Wisconsin COVID-19 Vaccine Exchange
Given the recent changes in expiration date for Johnson & Johnson vaccine, it is possible that a vaccinator may have listed doses on the Wisconsin COVID-19 Vaccine Exchange with a previous, now incorrect, expiration date. To correct the expiration date on the posted vaccine, please follow the steps below:
- Request the vaccine you are intending to remove using the Request Vaccine form. Fill out the appropriate fields, enter in your row ID, and ask for 0 doses. Click submit, then refresh the page. This will remove your listing.
- Re-list the vaccine via the Offer Vaccine form with the correct expiration date.
Thank you for working together to ensure Wisconsin vaccinators and their patients have access to needed Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
