Determining Adult Family Home Ambulatory Status

The Division of Quality Assurance (DQA), Bureau of Assisted Living (BAL) licenses 3-4 bed Adult Family Homes (AFH) throughout the State of Wisconsin.

The ambulatory status of an AFH is dependent upon the residents to be served at the home and the home’s construction, including common space, exits, grab bars, and more.

  • Licenses issued prior to September 2016 did not include an ambulation designation. Multi-story homes were not issued an ambulatory with conditions or non-ambulatory with conditions license.
  • Beginning September 2016, newly licensed AFH’s include a designation of ambulatory, ambulatory with conditions, or non-ambulatory. Printed and published licenses issued after this date include the AFH ambulation designation.

Effective January 1, 2021, BAL has provided additional information for applicants to review to determine AFH ambulatory status.
