ACIP Recommendations

On Tuesday, December 1, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that the initial phase of the COVID-19 vaccination program (Phase 1A) include both health care personnel (HCP) and residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) once a vaccine is available for use. A summary of the meeting and an note were published on ACIP’s website and an special MMWR summarizing the vote will be posted today.

A draft Allocation Framework for Wisconsin, as developed by the Wisconsin State Disaster Medical Advisory Committee (SDMAC), is open for public comment until Friday, December 4 at 5:00 p.m. The intent of the framework is to ensure the fair and transparent distribution of a vaccine in Wisconsin, given that Wisconsin’s initial allocation of the vaccine will not be enough to vaccinate everyone.

In the coming weeks, two vaccines are expected to receive FDA approval.

The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) will meet on Dec. 10 to discuss Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Moderna has also submitted an application for EUA approval for its vaccine, with December 17, 2020 set as the date that VRBPAC will discuss EUA.

As more vaccine doses become available and more COVID-19 vaccines are approved by the FDA, the ACIP and SDMAC committees will evaluate and expand recommendations to include other groups.
