The Small Talks: How WI Prevents Underage Drinking Quarterly Newsletter is published four times a year with information on Wisconsin's underage drinking prevention campaign. Small Talks is a statewide campaign created by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services that encourages adults – especially parents and caregivers – to have short, casual conversations about the dangers of underage drinking with the children in their lives starting at age 8.

Add small talks to the holiday checklist

While holiday gatherings may look different this year, talking with your kids about the dangers of underage drinking this time of year is still recommended. Help them sort out what they may hear or see from others before someone hands them drink. Get talk tips.

Coming soon

We are committed to focusing on upstream prevention tactics to build healthy communities. The Small Talks campaign is a critical part of this effort. We know that having small talks about alcohol can be effective in preventing underage drinking. We also know that having small talks about other drugs can be effective in reducing the misuse and abuse of those drugs. In 2021, we will be adding information to SmallTalksWI.org to help parents and other caring adults have small talks about cannabis, stimulants, and opioids.

Replay: Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Seminar

The Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Seminar was held October 8, 2020. It highlighted policies and practices to prevent alcohol-related harms, including the Small Talks campaign. All of the sessions were recorded. Watch the recordings to learn how to build healthy communities.

Check out Resilient Wisconsin

When we build resilience and find ways to cope with stress and trauma, we take a step closer to a healthier future for us all. That's because trauma is both a risk factor for—and a painful consequence of—some of Wisconsin’s most complex public health challenges, including harmful substance use like underage drinking. They’re all connected. Resilient Wisconsin is a statewide initiative designed to provide Wisconsinites of all ages with the tools to build resiliency.
