Framing for Social Change
A Virtual Seminar Series with the FrameWorks Institute
As an organization that promotes policies grounded in science, the Division of Public Health (DPH) Office of Policy and Practice Alignment (OPPA) is delighted to announce a new partnership with the FrameWorks Institute, a think tank known for its empirical approach to communications on social issues. Local and tribal health department staff are warmly invited to view the webinar series hosted by FrameWorks staff, which explores recent studies with direct implications for our communications and outreach efforts.
The sessions cover the following topics:
Part 1: Why does framing matter? (29:15)
How we say what we say has consequences for people’s policy support. We’ll use framing theory to look at how our brains process information and show examples of how small changes in communications can yield big differences in response.
Part 2: Anticipating Public Thinking and Common Communications Traps (32:53)
How do existing patterns of public thinking about public health issues constrain the policy climate – and how might communicators open up thinking by changing the way we frame these issues? This webinar will draw from FrameWorks Institute’s body research on the communications aspects of public health and other related issues. This webinar will also cover strategies to avoid when trying to engage members of the public on public health policy issues.
Part 3: Framing Health Equity (23:42)
This part of the webinar series will explore FrameWorks Institute’s recent research on the communications aspects of health equity. Practical takeaways will include: evidence-based recommendations on how to frame racial equity and racial disparities and a tested approach for explaining the social determinants of health.
Recordings of the 3-part series are available for you to view and download on the PHHS SharePoint. You can watch each segment individually, but you'll get the most out of the series if you view all three.
