Starting June 1, 2020, FoodShare Interviews Must Be Completed Within Seven Days for Expedited FoodShare Benefits

Since 2009, expedited FoodShare benefits have been issued to eligible FoodShare applicants before they complete a required interview. USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, which administers FoodShare at a federal level, has stopped allowing states to offer expedited benefits before the interview is completed.

If someone is in a situation where they need food immediately, and have little or no money to purchase that food, they may be eligible for expedited FoodShare benefits. If an applicant is eligible for expedited FoodShare, they will receive benefits within 7 days of the date they filed the application, instead of within the normal 30-day application processing timeframe for FoodShare.

Beginning June 1, 2020, FoodShare applicants will need to complete an interview within seven days of applying for FoodShare to be eligible for expedited benefits. Income maintenance agencies will make at least two attempts to contact the applicant. However, if the interview cannot be completed within seven days, the expedited application will be processed as a regular FoodShare application. The applicant will still need to complete an interview, but it will need to be completed within the regular 30-day application processing timeframe instead.
