Message Sent to County EMS Regarding State COVID-19 Isolation Sites

This bulletin is being sent to local health officers, tribal health directors, and key DPH staff.

The State of Wisconsin is planning to open two COVID-19 Isolation Sites, one in Milwaukee and one in Madison. This could be as early as Tuesday, March 24 depending on contracting. These are intended to house clients who are known or suspected to have COVID-19 and who cannot isolate in their own home.

Referrals may be made from hospitals, clinics, and homeless shelters. Individuals may not self-refer.  Clients must be considered stable and not in need of hospitalization and must have the ability for self-care. Wellness checks will be conducted by phone while clients are staying in the facility, and medical evaluation will be provided if needed.

Pending contracting, these are the targeted locations (subject to change):

  • Dane County - Lowell Center, 610 Langdon St. Madison 53703
  • Milwaukee County - Super 8, 5253 Howell Ave. Milwaukee 53207

Dane County and Milwaukee County have been selected as the initial sites due to the high number of COVID-19 cases and consequent need for isolation facilities. The guidance and “blueprint” created for these facilities will then be provided across the state for the set-up of isolation sites statewide.

You can assist in this process by starting to identify facilities that could be used for this purpose as well as their legal point of contact. Here are some additional things to consider as you identify potential sites. Please send a list of potential sites to DMAOPS@wisconsin.gov.

Please note, these isolation centers are voluntary. Isolation centers are not supposed to be a jail or detention facility of any kind, but rather a place for individuals who cannot safely quarantine themselves in their own residence.
