Member Copays Were Temporarily Suspended on January 1, 2020

On January 1, 2020, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) temporarily suspended Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus member copays for dates of service on and after January 1, 2020.

The temporary suspension is part of DHS’s planned system changes to ensure that members enrolled in most forms of Medicaid will not be charged premiums and copays that exceed 5% of their income.

On January 1, 2020, Medicaid-enrolled providers were notified that they could not collect any copays for services provided to Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus members. A Forward Health Member Update was sent to households informing them of the temporary suspension of copay.

Providers will be able to begin collecting copays again on July 1, 2020. DHS will provide another update in advance of this date as a reminder for both partners and providers.

Note: The temporary suspension of copays does not apply for members enrolled in SeniorCare or the Wisconsin Chronic Disease Program (WCDP). SeniorCare and WCDP members will continue to be charged copays.
