FoodShare Members Living in Some High Unemployment Areas Exempted From Work Requirements

Some FoodShare members are subject to work requirements as part of their FoodShare eligibility. The federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) recently approved a waiver allowing such members living in counties that have an unemployment rate higher than the national average to be exempted from these work requirements. Tribal members who live on tribal lands that have an unemployment rate higher than the national average are also exempted.

Effective October 1, 2019, FoodShare members who live in the following counties are exempted:

  • Adams
  • Ashland
  • Bayfield
  • Forest
  • Iron
  • Menominee

Tribal members who live on the following tribal lands are exempted:

  • Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians
  • Forest County Potawatomi Community
  • Ho-Chunk Nation
  • Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin
  • Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians
  • Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin
  • Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
  • St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin
  • Sokaogon Chippewa Community
  • Stockbridge-Munsee Community

The waiver requires annual approval from FNS, so this exemption lasts until September 30, 2020. FoodShare members in these areas can still participate in FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) if they wish to.
