Allowable Diagnosis Providers
The Wisconsin Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Functional Screen now allows more provider types to make a diagnosis within the screen. The full Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Functional Screen instructions are being updated and will be released soon. This policy change is now in effect. It may be utilized by certified screeners.
Who can make mental illness and substance use diagnoses?
- Psychiatric diagnoses must be made by a psychiatrist, licensed psychologist, physician, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor, or advanced practice nurse practitioner for whom diagnosing a mental health or substance use disorder is appropriate to their specialization and within the scope of their training and practice.
- Diagnoses made by psychiatric nurse practitioners or physician assistants count if made under supervision of a psychiatrist.
- Substance use diagnoses checked in the screen should reflect diagnoses made by professionals whose scope of practice includes diagnosing substance use disorders. This may include physicians, advanced practice nurses, psychiatrists, or other substance use disorder professionals.
