AHRQ Recruiting Long-Term Care Facilities for Antibiotic Stewardship Project

The AHRQ (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) is seeking long-term care facilities to join a national project that aims to reduce harms related to inappropriate use of antibiotics while preserving antibiotics’ effectiveness for future generations. The 12-month project is offered at no charge, and will begin in December. Continuing education credits are available.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Management Improvement Toolkit

As you may be aware, the Wisconsin Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) in Long-Term Care (LTC) Coalition along with academic partners at the University of Wisconsin are also recruiting nursing homes for a research study that will focus on implementation of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Management Improvement Toolkit that has been developed by Coalition members. The AHRQ project described above is independent of the WI HAIs in LTC Coalition study and will focus more broadly on development of a facility antibiotic stewardship program.

While there are potential benefits in participating in both studies, interested nursing homes should carefully consider whether they have the capacity to do so. Members of the UW research team would be happy to have a conversation with your staff if they need advice on which of these two studies they should consider and may contact Lillian Vranas, Program Manager of the Division of Infectious Disease, UW Department of Medicine at 608-334-6680 (cell) or lkubebwa@medicine.wisc.edu.
