FYI / CMS Releases S&C Memo 17-31
Filling Saline Syringes at the Patient Treatment Station

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released Survey & Certification (S&C) Memo 17-31-ESRD on June 2, 2017, regarding the preparation and administration of intravenous medications. Pursuant to current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ESRD facilities may not fill syringes with saline from the single dose saline bag or IV tubing connected to the patient at the dialysis station.

This memorandum clarifies and supersedes any information that may have been previously communicated allowing the filling of syringes from the saline bag in the station. CMS issued a revision to this memo on June 6, 2017, to reflect an effective date of July 2, 2017.  Please email any questions to the CMS ESRD mailbox at ESRDQuestions@cms.hhs.gov.
