This is the first detection of HPAI in Wisconsin cattle. The affected farm has been quarantined to limit disease spread.
DATCP and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) continue to work together to provide information on personal protective equipment (PPE). DHS advises those working with animals to take precautions and wear PPE per the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) guidance. According to the CDC, the public health risk from HPAI detections remains low.
DATCP urges all livestock owners to implement strong biosecurity measures to protect their flocks and herds from the disease. This includes washing hands, disinfecting equipment, restricting access to animals, and separating new additions to the flock or herd for at least 30 days. Poultry owners are asked, when possible, to keep their birds indoors.
