HPAI Cases in Poultry in Wisconsin
In December, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1, was confirmed in three poultry flocks in Wisconsin. Nationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed 146 flocks in 16 states in the last 30 days. Access the map of poultry detections.
New Strain Detection in Dairy Cattle
This month, the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced a new genotype of H5N1 detected in dairy cattle in Nevada and Arizona. This new strain, genotype D1.1, has also been found in wild migratory birds. H5N1 has not been detected in dairy cattle in Wisconsin. Learn more about H5N1 in dairy cattle.
Biosecurity Tips
DATCP urges all livestock owners to implement strong biosecurity measures to protect their flocks and herds:
Wash hands and disinfect equipment regularly.
Restrict access to animals.
Separate new additions to the flock or herd for at least 30 days.
Keep poultry indoors when possible.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
DATCP and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) advise those working with animals to take precautions and wear PPE per CDC guidance. Producers and processors can request PPE from the DHS medical stockpile. Request PPE.
Biosecurity Tips for Upcoming Events
With fairs, shows, and dairy breakfasts approaching, it's important to emphasize biosecurity:
Enhance biosecurity measures and monitor disease in your herds.
Report flocks with unexplained symptoms to DATCP at (608) 224-4872 (business hours) or (800) 943-0003 (after hours and weekends).
