Forest Pest Survey and Detection |

In partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has detected emerald ash borer (EAB) for the first time in Rusk County. DNR Forest Health staff detected this ash tree-killing beetle along the roadside right-of-way in the Village of Sheldon on July 25. EAB was confirmed by USDA-APHIS on August 7. The tree displayed characteristic symptoms of EAB presence, including woodpecker flecking, crown dieback, and serpentine feeding-galleries.
Rusk County is the third new county detection of 2023 and marks the 69th county detection since EAB was first confirmed in the state in 2008. There are three Wisconsin counties that have not had an EAB detection.
There are no state or federal regulatory changes as a result of this detection. EAB was federally deregulated as of January 14, 2021 and Wisconsin rescinded its state quarantine effective July 1, 2023.

Note: DATCP will send notifications only when EAB is found for the first time in a county.
