Situation Briefing

Since the October 30 announcement for a bovine tuberculosis (TB)-affected herd in Dane County, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has been tracing any animals that may have been brought onto or moved off of the TB-affected farm for the past five years. All animals that responded to the first tuberculin skin test have been removed from the farm, were sent to either rendering or slaughter, and completed inspection and testing.

Next Steps

With whole herd testing complete and all animals that reacted to skin testing removed, USDA is evaluating options for the herd going forward. Those options are either test and remove or depopulate. The test and remove option would identify how often and how long the herd would need to be tested and remove any animals from the herd that test positive. To depopulate would result in euthanizing the entire herd.

DATCP continues to trace out sales from the herd, and has not had any further TB-affected herds. DATCP will continue to evaluate trace out herds and test or place movement restrictions based on risk and operational type.

Situation briefings will be provided weekly, as-needed to update industry partners on the current situation.
