Measles case reported in King County
Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC) and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) identified a case of measles in a child with unknown vaccine history.
The source of the infection is not known, and the child had not traveled internationally. The child was at Aki Kurose Middle School, Pike Place Market, World Market, and HopeCentral Pediatrics & Behavioral Health in Seattle while infectious.
We have not seen any cases in Pierce County. Measles is a viral disease that spreads easily from person to person. Because of vaccines, measles is rare in the U.S. Measles usually appears in two stages:
- The person develops a fever, runny nose and cough.
- After about three days, a raised, red spotty rash develops.
Visit our immunizations page to find vaccine locations near you. Free vaccines are available for kids, including those 5 and under. Learn more at tpchd.org/measels.

Empowering South Tacoma children and families
In honor of Mother’s Day this year, Pan con Café recognized mothers, aunties, grandmothers and other wonderful caregivers that help to raise and nurture children.
Established in the 2021-2022 school year, Franklin Pierce Family Resource Center (FPFRC) is a strengths-based, family-focused community hub. FPFRC honors the experience, perspective, and culture of all who enter its doors.
Formed through the partnership of Franklin Pierce Schools, United Way of Pierce County, the Pierce County Council, and Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, FPFRC hosts agencies and partners that provide the community resources and support to help families thrive.
This year, FPFRC hosted its first Pan con Café (Coffee and Sweets) family group. Co-designed with former Triple P participants and diaper bank clients, Pan con Café provides an opportunity to make social connections. Each month, families gather to build healthy relationships, celebrate together, and learn about new resources and events.
