Dear Snohomish County Neighbors,

In this month’s e-newsletter, I’ll share some exciting personal news, recap recent community events, and provide information on an upcoming youth-oriented volunteer opportunity. Here is a summary with the full content below:

Community Fun: From local 4th of July celebrations to our beach cleanup and more, local summer events are in full bloom.
New Arrival
Our family welcomed a newborn baby boy on June 1st. Jude Lee Nehring arrived weighing 8 lbs 5 oz and he is the youngest brother to an excited group of siblings in the Nehring household. Mom and baby are both doing great and we are so appreciative of all the prayers and well wishes!
Upcoming Kayak Youth Beach Cleanup Event
You’re invited! On Saturday, July 12th, my office is partnering with the WSU Extension Beach Watchers to host a beach cleanup event at Kayak Point Park. This is a youth-oriented event, but all ages are welcome. Help keep our Puget Sound beaches clean and turn the day into a family outing. We will provide gloves & supplies along with light refreshments. I hope to see you there!
Evergreen Boys State
I had the privilege of presenting at the Evergreen Boys State annual conference a couple weeks ago. Evergreen Boys State is a youth leadership conference hosted by the American Legion which educates and engages teens about Washington State government through a series of guest speakers, mock elections, mock trials, and local government simulations. For the third year in a row, Councilmember Mead and I had the opportunity to join the Evergreen Boys State conference as guest speakers. We shared our experience in county government and the importance of civil discourse and working together.
We had a great time presenting to the group and answering their thoughtful questions. I am always impressed by these students and look forward to continuing to support this work.
YMCA Volunteer Breakfast
The YMCA of Snohomish County hosts an annual Volunteer of the Year breakfast in Everett to recognize hardworking volunteers throughout our communities. It was great to attend this event and learn more about the positive impact which YMCA volunteers are having. Congratulations to the award recipients and thank you to the YMCA for hosting this event each year.
Juneteenth Freedom Day
On June 19th, we celebrated Juneteenth Freedom Day in Snohomish County and throughout the country. This holiday commemorates the arrival of Union troops in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865, where they announced the freedom of enslaved African Americans. This announcement occurred over two years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It’s important to honor this history by renewing our commitment to justice and equality for all.
I was honored to speak at Snohomish County’s Juneteenth ceremony along with other community leaders.
Marysville Strawberry Festival
The annual Marysville Strawberry Festival is Washington State’s 3rd largest festival and parade, and this year’s celebrations ran from June 16th – June 22nd. Activities included free roller skating for families, a royalty scholarship Fashion Show, free youth bowling, the Funtastic carnival, and the Grand Parade. My family and I enjoyed attending this year’s Strawberry Festival and I am grateful to all of the MaryFest volunteers who work to put these community events on each year.
