Candidate Filing for County and Local Offices Runs May 5 to May 9

Candidate filing for the 2025 ballot begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 5, and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Over 180 local offices are up for election this year, including three county council seats, city and town mayor and council positions, school district directors, and various district commissioners. A complete list of offices up for election is available in the Snohomish County Elections 2025 Candidate Guide posted on the Snohomish County Elections website

Candidate filing begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 5. Candidates are encouraged to file online at sos.wa.gov/elections. In-person candidate filing is available at the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office on the 1st floor of the Admin West Building, 3000 Rockefeller Avenue in Everett, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All filing ends at 5 p.m. Friday, May 9.

To file for office, candidates must meet all qualifications for the office. Most positions require a candidate to be a registered voter in the district. Some positions may require a filing fee or have additional requirements, such as meeting a minimum age, having residency for a minimum amount of time in the jurisdiction, or being admitted to practice law in Washington courts. More information on position requirements and filing fees is available in the 2025 Candidate Guide

At the time of filing, each candidate will be asked to provide information regarding themselves and their campaign, including:

  • Name (as listed in voter registration records)
  • Residential address
  • Date of birth
  • Email address that can be shared with the public

Additionally, offices that provide a salary require a filing fee equal to one percent of the salary. The filing fee must be paid at the time of filing or by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9.

In the weeks leading up to candidate filing, Snohomish County Elections conducted four candidate workshops to provide potential candidates with an overview of filing requirements, important dates and deadlines, guidelines for Local Voters’ Pamphlet statement submissions, and other important candidate information. Three of the workshops were presented in person, and one workshop was held virtually on Zoom. A recording of the virtual candidate workshop is available to watch on the Snohomish County Elections website.

In late April, Snohomish County Elections also hosted a campaign finance reporting seminar presented by the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission (PDC) that covered what financial information candidates and campaigns must disclose and how and when to report campaign contributions.

Additional information, including a complete list of offices up for election, candidate filing fees, and position qualifications, is available at snoco.org/elections. Contact Snohomish County Elections at (425) 388-3444 or elections@snoco.org with questions.
