Councilmember Nehring's August Newsletter

Snohomish County NewsNate Nehring

Dear North County Neighbors,

I hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful 4th of July and were able to stay cool in our warm summer weather last month. July was very busy at Snohomish County and the coming months look to be busy as well with the adoption of our comprehensive plan update and biennial budget.

Assassination attempt on President Trump

Like millions of other Americans, I was shocked and saddened by the attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania. I pray for the wife and children of the rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, who was tragically killed in this heinous attack. I am thankful that President Trump survived the assassination attempt. This kind of political violence is absolutely unacceptable in the United States of America. We must find ways to engage in political discourse that does not dehumanize the “other side.” I joined Councilmember Mead in writing an op-ed in the Everett Herald condemning the attack and calling for all Americans to do their part in lowering the political temperature in our country. You can read that op-ed here.

Permit Timelines at the Health Department

You may have seen recent news regarding the permit timelines at the Snohomish County Department of Health. The coverage highlights the struggle of new businesses, especially food establishments, in trying to open while waiting for their permits in order to legally operate in Snohomish County. Every level of government should work to support local businesses and obstacles like long permitting processes make it extremely difficult for new businesses to start and stay open. While the Department of Health is aware of these issues and working hard toward shortened timelines, there is still much work to do. Last month, I wrote a letter to the Board of Health with a policy suggestion that permit fees be refunded to the applicant if the permit process exceeds a set timeline. This was recently implemented in the State of Pennsylvania and seems like a reasonable, common-sense policy to create accountability within government agencies. You can read the letter in full here. I have heard from a few of the Board of Health members that they are interested in pursuing this policy.
