Dear North County Neighbors,
With Memorial Day just behind us, I want to take the opportunity to recognize those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. I had the opportunity to join the Memorial Day parade in Arlington on Monday, followed by a dedication ceremony for the completed Snohomish County Veterans Memorial Bridge project near Haller Park. The final piece of the memorial includes plaques on both sides of the sculpture inscribed with the names of Snohomish County veterans who gave their lives in post-9/11 conflicts. This is a unique and fitting memorial and I was honored to attend the dedication ceremony this Memorial Day. This memorial gives us an opportunity every day to recognize the brave men and women who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms.

Drug Testing Ordinance
Last month, the County Council adopted Ordinance 24-011 which requires annual testing of County-owned supportive housing facilities for methamphetamine and hazardous chemicals. I proposed this policy following multiple documented instances of extensive drug contamination in other supportive housing facilities throughout Snohomish County. This new policy will ensure that the County is able to detect and address contamination early and often in order to minimize damage to taxpayer-funded facilities.
The policy was drafted in consultation with the County’s Health Department, Department of Facilities and Fleet, and Executive’s Office to ensure best practices and effective implementation were addressed in the ordinance. I appreciate the support of my Council colleagues and the County staff for their efforts in adopting this commonsense policy. There is still a long way to go in addressing the many negative impacts of the drug epidemic; this policy is a small but positive step in the right direction.
