Welcome to the Spring season, I hope you're finding time to enjoy some of the great spaces that make Snohomish County a wonderful place to call home. Here at the County Council, we've been busy with a few very important bodies of work including the Comprehensive Plan Update, the biannual budget, and various other policy work. If there are any questions or additional information I can provide, please feel free to use the contact information located at the bottom of this newsletter. Thank you!
Last month, I visited the Mountlake Terrace City Council meeting to provide a briefing on Snohomish County business. During my visit, I presented on the Comprehensive Plan Update, our expected growth in South County, the upcoming switch to a biannual budget for Snohomish County, and land use policies that will help maintain the character of Snohomish County while simultaneously preparing for future growth. It was a pleasure to join the City of Mountlake Terrace during their council meeting and I look forward to future opportunities to collaborate.
On May 29th, the County Council passed Resolution 24-032, celebrating our community in Snohomish County by declaring the month of June 2024 as Pride Month and affirming that LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights. If you're interested in celebrating Pride Month with community members, you are cordially invited to join for the 4th Annual Pride Flag Raising Event at the Snohomish County campus on Wednesday, June 5th from 12:00 - 2:00 PM. The event will include food trucks and resources for attendees. The event is held at the flag poles located near the Carnegie Building on Oakes Street between Pacific and Wall Street. I have also included a link to the event page for more information.
Have a safe celebration and happy Pride Month!
You are formally invited to Snohomish County's Juneteenth Flag Raising Event on Tuesday, June 18th from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th of each year to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, when on June 19th, 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021 and since then, Snohomish County has celebrated with a flag raising ceremony. This year, the NAACP of Snohomish County will be hosting a Juneteenth Celebration at Willis D. Tucker Park and the details are listed below.
Date: Saturday, June 22nd from 11:00 - 3:00 PM
Location: 6705 Puget Park Drive, Snohomish, WA 98296
Cost: Free

I hope to see you there to celebrate!
Since 2019, there has been a ban on the discharge of fireworks within the Urban Growth Boundary in Snohomish County. On May 15th, the Snohomish County Council heard Ordinance 23-057 relating to the sale of fireworks in the same area as the ban on discharging. The County Council has been discussing the issue of banning the sale for quite sometime and those discussions have included staff presentations, public comment, and extensive deliberation. Ultimately, the County Council voted unanimously to ban the sale of fireworks in this area to avoid further confusion about the issue and ideally improve the safety and quality of life in these areas. Under state law, ordinances adopted by counties or cities that are more restrictive than state law shall have an effective date no sooner than one year after their adoption. So the ordinance won't be effective this year but will active by this time in 2025. You can learn more about fireworks in Snohomish County using this link. If you need to report illegal discharge, you can call the non-emergency line at 425-407-3999.
As part of my commitment to our community, I am starting a tour of local businesses in District 4 to meet business owners and share their business through this newsletter. If you own or know someone who owns a business located in Bothell, Mill Creek, Brier, Mountlake Terrace, or unincorporated South Snohomish County, please reach out and I would love to schedule a tour and highlight their business here. I'm looking forward to meeting new neighbors!
