2nd Annual Civic Education Day

On Thursday, January 25th, we held our second annual Civic Education Day at the county campus. Councilmember Mead and I started Civic Education Day last year where high school students from across Snohomish County were invited to the county campus in Everett. The 2nd annual event was a great success. During their visit, students heard from county elected officials and staff to learn more about the role of County government, civic engagement, and future career opportunities. We had a great time meeting students and answering their questions about County government. I am excited to see this annual Civic Education Day continue to grow in the coming years.  

MLK Day of Service

One of my top priorities since joining the Snohomish County Council has been promoting economic growth in North County. This includes the Cascade Industrial Center (CIC) which spans 4,000 acres in Arlington and Marysville which have been designated for manufacturing and industrial jobs. The cities in partnership with Snohomish County achieved official designation of the CIC in 2019 as a manufacturing/industrial center.  

In January, we held a ceremony to celebrate the CIC’s recognition as one of the Governor’s 2023 Smart Communities Award recipients. The Smart Communities Award recognizes local governments’ efforts to create vibrant and livable communities. This is a wonderful recognition of many years of dedication from local officials to bring family-wage jobs to North Snohomish County.  (PC: Everett Herald)

Snohomish County Update Presentations

In January, I presented an annual Snohomish County Update to the Stanwood Commerce Alliance and the Stillaguamish Tribal Council. I always appreciate the opportunity to share the work we are doing on the Snohomish County Council and answer your questions about county government.  

At these presentations I shared updates on Snohomish County’s budget, economic development efforts throughout our area, the Regional Apprenticeship Pathways (RAP) Program, local parks and infrastructure projects, broadband expansion efforts, affordable housing issues, and public safety. Honoring Marysville Students

We have many students doing great things throughout Snohomish County. Last month, we had the opportunity to recognize two outstanding students from the Marysville School District at the Snohomish County Council. At our January 30th meeting, we recognized Claire Michal and Gianna Frank for their selection and participation in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. Each year, two high school students from each state are selected to participate in the program and receive a scholarship to recognize their achievements.  

Claire was selected in 2023 and Gianna was selected for the 2024 program. Both are students in the Marysville School District and it is the first time that students from the same school district have been chosen in back-to-back years. We are so proud of Claire Michal and Gianna Frank and I’m glad we had the opportunity to recognize their hard work with individual resolutions passed by the County Council.
