Duke's Chowder House is coming to Shilshole

On Tuesday, May 9 the Port of Seattle Commission approved a 20-year lease for Duke's Chowder House to construct and operate a restaurant at Shilshole Bay Marina!

Duke's will construct a 6,500 square foot full service restaurant with outdoor deck and seating in the central plaza near the marina administration building. Design and permitting work is starting now, and the construction is anticipated to start mid-2018 with a mid-2019 restaurant opening.

Associated site preparations will include the creation of a short-term parking area (133 spaces), however no reserved parking is included.

Thank you to all who have supported and provided input on recruiting a restaurant for the marina!

Help your friends get into boating while enjoying food and fun

This FREE event will get landlubbers out on a boat (or a few) and introduce them to all sorts of folks who can help them get into boating (even without a boat), show them how to boat safety, and teach them about protecting the environment while they boat so they can continue to enjoy the water after the event.

Current boaters and landlubbers will also enjoy Napkin Friends314 Pie & Mini...The Dough-Nut food trucks, Maritime Pacific Brewing Company beer and Domanico Cellars wine garden, live music, and kids' activities including two sea-themed bounce houses.

Boat fire response summary

As you may know, two boats on M-dock – M-64 and M-66 – caught fire before 1am on April 8. The Seattle Fire Department responded and the fires were extinguished. There were no injuries or fatalities. Unfortunately one vessel sank, one vessel sustained extensive damage, and a third adjacent vessel that had been removed during the slip during the incident sustained minor damage. The boat that sank had a minimal gasoline spill, but it has since been floated and removed from its slip. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified and is under investigation by the Seattle Fire Department (SFD).

We would like to thank the SFD and our staff for their response during this incident. After an internal debriefing, we found all involved acted appropriately with just a few ideas for minor improvements in the event of a future boat fire.

We would also like to thank you all for your help in watching over the Shilshole Bay Marina community.

New text alert used in boat fire incident

The recent boat fire gave marina staff an opportunity to put the newly launched text alert system to the test.

Text alerts are used for urgent notifications and allow staff to immediately notify boaters about a situation. In the boat fire case, the text message informed customers a fire had taken place and that the boat owners directly affected by the fire had already been contacted directly.

The alert provided an efficient way to communicate and we encourage all moorage customers to sign up by texting “BOAT” to (206) 258-6988.

Please also review the emergency contact information we have for you on file, as that is the information we use to contact boaters when an incident affects their vessel/slip which we will do immediately upon learning of any emergency. You are also welcome to call the marina office.

Ensuring Your Four-Legged Friend is a Good Neighbor

We hope you enjoyed our inaugural Shilshole Celebrates Earth Day campaign, where we distributed dog poop bag holders and leashes in honor of Earth Day and as part of the Port of Seattle's efforts to improve the health of our communities.

As we head into peak boating season, please remind your pets of the policy for being a good neighbor at the marina:

  • Don't be disruptive to other tenants: use inside voices, don't invade other tenants' personal space or property, and so on.
  • Wear your leash (nay: "show it off!") at all times and in all places at the marina, including the best of behaved.
  • Dispose of your "business" in the garbage can immediately after finishing it.

Thank you all for communicating this to your pets for us!

News from around the Port

The Port of Seattle is set to host 150 summer interns in 2017

The Port of Seattle is filling 150 paid internships for high school and college students. The internship program, which tripled the number of positions offered from two years ago, is one element of the Port’s community-based effort to close the labor gap as the Boomer Generation leaves the workforce.

We look forward to hosting some of the interns here at Shilshole Bay Marina! Be on the watch for new faces starting this summer.
