Mayor Wilson to Sign First-in-the-Nation Citywide Fair Pricing in Groceries Consumer Protection Measure
SEATTLE — Everyone in Seattle should get a fair price for the food they put on the table, no matter who they are or what a company knows about them.
At 10:30 AM on Monday, October 5, Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson, alongside Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck, Dionne Foster, and Rob Saka, City Attorney Erika Evans, and community members, will sign Council Bill 121267, Fair and Transparent Pricing policy, a first-in-the-nation city-led consumer protection measure designed to stop grocery retailers from using personal data to set different prices for different customers.
The ordinance was sponsored by Councilmembers Rinck, Foster, and Saka, and passed by Seattle City Council in September.
Why it matters: The policy, developed through months of collaboration with labor partners, industry stakeholders, and community advocates, marks a major step toward making everyday essentials more affordable and ensuring pricing practices are fair, open, and consistent.
The Fair Pricing policy prevents large online and brick-and-mortar grocery retailers from using sensitive personal information — including employment status, race, gender, browsing history, social media activity, or chatbot conversations — to manipulate the prices customers pay. Prices must be clearly posted and available to all shoppers.
Press interested in attending should RSVP to Alex.Hudson@seattle.gov.
