Seattle Channel honored with 8 Government Programming Awards
The City of Seattle’s municipal TV station recognized with top national honor
 Friday, September 18, 2026: Seattle, WA – The programming that keeps Seattle residents informed about their city has earned national recognition once again. Seattle Channel was recognized Thursday night by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) in Kansas City, Mo., for its public service programming, receiving the prestigious Overall Excellence Award for stations with operating budgets over $1 million. It’s the team's 12th Overall Excellence award in the past 17 years, which is the top honor given to a government television station by NATOA. This year, the channel earned the distinction among peers in Austin, San Francisco, San Diego County, and Fairfax County, Va.
“Seattle Channel remains steadfast in its commitment to government transparency, community engagement, and creativity. Every story they tell and every program they produce is guided by the belief that an informed and inspired public strengthens our City and region,” said Acting Chief Technology Officer Shannon Smith. “I’m proud the team upholds these values as they continue delivering meaningful and accessible content that reflects and serves the people of Seattle.”
In total, the city-operated television station won eight Government Programming Awards, including two top-level Awards of Excellence: one for Overall Excellence and one for its news and magazine series, CityStream. Competing against the best municipal television stations in the nation, Seattle Channel also received four Awards of Distinction, including for diversity and inclusion programming, fire and EMS coverage, videography, and editing. The station also received two Awards of Honor for Edited Community Event Coverage and Profile of a City/County Department.
For more than 41 years, NATOA has honored the local government programmers who keep communities informed and connected. The national association advocates for local governments on communications, broadband, and technology issues. Through its annual Government Programming Awards (GPAs), NATOA spotlights standout broadcast, cable, multimedia, and electronic programming created by local government agencies across the country. “To be recognized by our NATOA peers who serve their communities through public information and civic storytelling is both extremely meaningful and validating," says Shannon Gee, the station's general manager. “Congratulations to the whole Seattle Channel team for this acknowledgment of their talent, hard work, and public service.”
This year, NATOA recognized the work of government agencies across the nation in 77 categories. These include familiar categories such as community events, documentaries, public affairs, interview or talk shows, performing arts, sports, election coverage, ethnic experience and diversity, equity, and inclusion, and more.
Seattle Channel was recognized with eight awards: two Awards of Excellence, four Awards of Distinction, and two Awards of Honor. The 2026 NATOA honors include:
