HAPPENING FRIDAY: Seattle Fire and Police departments to commemorate the 25-year anniversary of 9/11

Seattle - The Seattle Fire and Police departments are commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 through various events on Friday, Sept. 11, including a public memorial at Seattle Center.

  • 8 – 8:15 a.m. flag raising at the Space Needle: Fire Chief Harold Scoggins will join Seattle Police Department Interim Chief Andre Sayles to raise the flag together at the Space Needle. KOMO is the pool camera for this event and is able to share footage with other outlets. Please contact their assignment desk at seattle-KOMO-news-assignment-desk@sbgtv.com to request access to the livestream.

  • 8:46 a.m. – 9 a.m. flag raising at fire stations: Seattle Fire stations will read aloud the 343 names of the FDNY firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. Media interested in covering this can email sfdpio@seattle.gov to receive a location to attend.

  • 9 - 11 a.m. meal packing event: a team of Seattle Fire and Police personnel will pack meals at Lumen Event Center as part of a National Day of Service hosted by the 9/11 Day Foundation.

  • 12 - 12:30 p.m. public memorial ceremony: SPD and SFD have partnered with the Seattle Center to hold a public memorial at the 9/11 Memorial Garden near the Fisher Pavilion on the Seattle Center campus. The Mayor, Fire Chief and Interim Police Chief are all offering remarks, and there will also be musical performances and a moment of silence at 12:25 p.m.

  • Flags at City facilities will be flown at half-staff in observance of 9/11.

Members of the media are also invited to schedule interviews with SFD personnel who were part of the department's search and rescue team that went to the World Trade Center after 9/11. An SPD member whose uncle was a firefighter with FDNY and lost their life that day is also available. Contact sfdpio@seattle.gov to coordinate a date and time.
