City Councilmembers call for more action on Aurora Avenue North after overnight shooting

SEATTLE – Today Councilmember Debora Juarez (District 5) and Councilmember Bob Kettle (District 7) issued the following statement after three women were hurt in a shooting in north Seattle, near the Licton Springs neighborhood off Aurora Avenue.

“Aurora must remain a priority for our city,” said Councilmember Juarez, whose district includes north Aurora Avenue. “Women and children continue to be targeted. Crime and sex trafficking are not going away. Traffic barriers are good, but they are not enough. More needs to be done. We will continue to work with Seattle Police, the Mayor’s Office and City Attorney Evan’s office to address crime in this area. That is why we support the proposed cross-deputized Vice Prosecutor position and will continue our work on the Public Safety Committee.”

"The three women who were hurt in last night's shooting remind us of what is happening to girls and young women on our streets and in the neighborhoods surrounding them,” said Councilmember Kettle, who chairs the Public Safety Committee. “We need a comprehensive, non-stop effort that uses any and all tools available, 24/7. We cannot do anything less — incidents like this are not acceptable."
