Installation of Swing Gates at Three Lake Washington Blvd Entrances Starts Next Week
Seattle, WA-Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR), in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), will begin the first phase of construction on three new Lake Washington Blvd Swing Gates starting June 9. The work will begin at Mt. Baker Beach and move south to S. Horton St, and then 43rd Ave. S. Please see the swing gate map for more details.
Beginning Tuesday, June 9 through Thursday, June 18, traffic control will be in place intermittently at three construction locations. Traffic will be limited to one lane at each site during day-time construction activities. Work is weather dependent.
The gates will be constructed in phases. The first phase is installation of the base and post that will hold the gate. Later this summer the cement pillars will be fabricated and installed on the base. Installation is anticipated to be complete by fall 2026 in time for 2027 Bicycle Weekends.
When complete the gates will be used during Bicycle Weekends to make street operations more intuitive for people driving and enhance the experience for people walking, biking and rolling. Parking lots, which include accessible parking, will continue to be open when gates are in use.
This work is part of the Lake Washington Boulevard Renovations and part of Phase 3 improvements and aligns with three goals:
- Improve access for all modes of travel
- Increase bicycle and pedestrian safety
- Preserve and improve the park experience
The swing gates will resemble the Olmsted gate design. A local community group received a Department of Neighborhoods Matching to conduct outreach and created artistic elements for the gates.
